What happens if you are not eligible for Georgia HOPE Scholarship as an incoming freshmen?

If you are not eligible for Georgia HOPE scholarship as a college freshmen but become eligible after 30 hours, can it pay for those classes/tuition you have taken when you were not eligible?

Also, when do people accumulate 30 hours on average? The end of sophomore year?

Carey:

The answer to your first question is “no”. Scholarship awards are not retroactive – you’re on your own for any semesters in which you have not qualified for the scholarship.

As to your second question – as long as you maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average for your first 30 credit hours, you will gain HOPE eligibility.

The minimum number of credit hours to be considered as a “full-time” student is 12, which represents about 4 classes. Many students take 15-18 credit hours in a semester, and the idea of the “30 hour” checkpoint is that 30 would represent a typical academic year for most students.

How long it will take you to reach 30 hours will be determined by how many credit hours you register for each semester. Many students would be able to complete 30 hours in their freshman year, but for others, 30 would come at the end of the first semester in their sophomore year.

Good luck – I hope this helped.

Full-time students take anywhere from 12-18 hours (more if approved by college) every semester. Freshmen are usually encouraged to stay near the lower end of this range so they can adjust to the workload that college gives. This means that, depending on your courseload, you could complete 30 hours at the end of your freshman year. If you are taking your time (nothing wrong with that) then you will have well over 30 hours after your 3rd semester (half-way through sophomore year).

Your question about the scholarship confuses me a bit…but i’ll try my best. Georgia offers both a scholarship and a grant through their HOPE program. If you don’t qualify for either of these your first year, that does not necessarily mean that you won’t qualify in future years. However, you can not go back and ask that past fees be covered for a year that you did not qualify. I don’t know of any scholarship/grant program that would allow this. If you didn’t qualify this year, you’ll have to wait until next year to apply and see if they will cover the fees/tuition for next year. Unfortuantely, you cannot ask them for extra money to cover the year you weren’t eligible because, simply, you weren’t eligible and were not entitled to the money in the past, and just because you are in the future does not change that.

I began 9th grade taking Spanish two because i could already speak Spanish pretty well, I took Spanish three for a semester before getting suspended for a year. Must i finish the second semester of Spanish three and take a third year of Spanish (Spanish IV >_<) my senior year to get a Hope Scholarship in Georgia? I hear rumors of needing 3 foreign language years (or credits?) for hope.

You only have to have the amount you need to graduate (probably 2).
